When, after getting your ears pierced, can you wear Sterling Silver earrings?
I've been wearing the studs they pierced with for 7 weeks, which is more than the allotted time given by the store. The place my sister got hers pierced at J. Rothstein Jewelers who say "Use only post style earrings for the first 4 months after piercing (12 months for cartilage). The post should be surgical steel or other hypo-allergenic material, such as 14K or 18K solid gold - no costume. Sterling silver is OK after 6 months, but that sometimes annoys the ear. Lightweight hoops or dangles are OK after 4 months." but this being my second piercing, and not having followed those rules the first time, I was wondering what other people thought...I disagree with Rothsteins. So when can I use sterling silver?

I don't think it matters what type of metal you use. Your ears are still going to be irritated until they heal and I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter if you have gold, silver, or platinum, as long as you're sure you're not allergic to the metal you are changing it to then go for it. I think they're just trying to avoid people reacting to metals they've never used before, because an allergic reaction on a new piercing is extremely uncomfortable to deal with (trust me I know). But then at the same time, the don't know what will work., I'm allergic to metals and my doctor told my mom 14K gold would be ideal when getting my ears pierced; that would be when we discovered I'm allergic to all forms of gold, and it was a pain. Sure hypoallergenic or surgical steel if you've got a history of metal allergies, otherwise go for the sterling silver
